What's Happening Around Lyon Academy? January 28th, 2016

Ms. Wolfenden uses dots on ladybugs to show the amount of growth students achieve on the STAR Reading Assessment. 

Ms. Connell and Ms. Wolfenden created "I Have a Dream" mobiles to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. 

Ms. Connell tracks the Fountas & Pinnell Data for her first and second grade students using a bar graph chart. 

Ms. Salmo and Ms. Kempf explicitly model tasks for IDR (individualized daily reading) by creating anchor charts for students. 

Ms. Salmo uses a fish to track Kindergarten student reading levels as they approach readiness for first grade. 

Ms. Richards posts group members and schedules for daily literacy centers.

Ms. Richards developed a creative anchor chart to introduce the vocabulary found in Reader's Theater. 

Ms. Archer tracks the performance of her 6th and 7th grade Math students' quiz and homework return rates using two line graph bulletin boards. 

Ms. Cychowski created two anchor charts to help students compare and contrast the similarities and differences between animal and plant cells. 

Ms. Jones' students are working on showing the relationship between fractions and decimals through the work they are doing in Math class.

Ms. Connell helps students to prepare for the Acuity Benchmark assessment by reviewing the importance of the test and the expectations so that classmates can be successful. 

Ms. Colacino's winter bulletin board helps students make inferences by using snowmen as a frame for their thinking. 

Prior to introducing graphing equations, Ms. Walter created a simple anchor chart to keep her students from confusing x and y intercepts. 

Ms. Latta's color coded anchor charts helps students to navigate complicated math problems that involve rounding. 

Mr. Loewenberg and Ms. Archer track the Pre-K students' letter knowledge by publicly showing how many letters each student knows proficiently. 

To help students with 1:1 correspondence and counting, Mr. Loewenberg created an anchor chart to help students visually match their counting with numbers and manipulatives. 

Mr. Loewenberg and Ms. Archer's students created an art project after reading the book "Leaf Man."

Ms. Archer's "Area of a Parallelogram" chart shows both the steps for solving an area problem as well as an example for the students. 

Ms. Selden developed an anchor chart that replicates the procedure for a "quote sandwich" as students work on literary essays. 

Ms. Pocost clarifies the expectations for entering the classroom as well as the Do-Now on this anchor chart that she can easily refer to at the front of her classroom. 

Ms. Welch's students developed a flow chart for how a bill becomes a law in the United States. 

Ms. Cychowski's 7th and 8th grade Science students showed their knowledge of kinetic vs. potential energy, building atoms of energy, and alternative energy in a variety of exploratory classroom projects. 

Ms. Richards helps students to organize and think about the main idea of "Poison Dart Frog" in anticipation of a compare and contrast activity in her classroom by developing a graphic organizer anchor chart.

Ms. Salmo publicly tracks daily mastery of Math objectives for her Kindergarten students. 

Ms. Wolfenden motivates her students positively by helping them to create a class goal for the entire month that in turn leads to positive classroom culture! 

Ms. Trapp's students used sight words to write a short story about dogs. 

  

Ms. Archer's 6th & 7th grade Math students can see their mastery of multiplication tables posted in the classroom. 

Mrs. Williams-Alberty posts the required materials students need for IDR in her classroom. 

Ms. Colacino publicly tracks and compares the the percentage of "on-task" time during IDR for her classes. 

Ms. Colacino's November and December Read-A-Thon is a great way to motivate students to read and stay on task during IDR! 

Ms. Richards' social media themed bulletin boards display student work. 

Ms. Richards anonymously tracks students' performance on district benchmark assessments in a way that encourages them to see their scores rise. 

Ms. Cychowski's 7th grade Science students completed a research report about a famous scientist.

In Ms. Colacino's read alouds of "Wonder," the teacher models how students make inferences about reading and then posts the inferences students make together. 

In Ms. Richards' room, the expectations for using Edmodo are clearly and visually posted. 

Ms. Latta's "I Notice" "I Wonder" anchor charts are student developed and displayed prominently around the classroom. 

Ms. Wolfenden emphasizes the importance of STAR Reading and reminds the students of what they must do to be ready for 3rd grades. 

1st grade readers in Ms. Kempf's class are learning how to read with expression by using punctuation marks. 

Mr. Clark's Word Wall is color coded and prominently displayed in the front of the room. 

In Mr. Loewenberg and Ms. Archer's Pre-K classroom, the expectations for the student activity, "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Ghost" clearly indicates what students are reading. 

Ms. Cychowski and Ms. Walter  motivate their students during Morning Meeting to earn an incentive. 

Ms. Pocost has her students competing to earn table points for their participation in class.

Ms. Cychowski's students analyzed various weather events, their causes, and effects in a study of weather. 

Students in Mr. Goodman's Art classes created colorful images of food. 

Ms. Colacino showcased the "poe-tree" of her students outside her classroom. 

Ms. Latta's 3rd grade students combined Language Arts skills with Science content by writing informative pieces about trees.

Ms. Wolfenden's students practiced making text connections after learning about the skill in read alouds for several weeks. 

Ms. Wolfenden's anchor chart helps students to visualize place value, a difficult elementary Math concept. 

Ms. Selden showcases the students making growth on STAR Reading in her classroom and shows how many months worth of growth they have achieved. 

Ms. Pocost's Electromagnetic Spectrum Anchor Chart helps students with a project as they learn about waves and wavelengths. 

Several teachers have "While You Were Out" boards which are great for helping absent students when they return to your classroom. 

A "3-2-1" is a great Formative Assessment strategy that can be implemented at any stage of a lesson.  

Mr. Clark's students demonstrated knowledge of guitars from their recent lessons by designing their own. 

Ms. Andrews' Text Codes Anchor Chart helps her students to interact with text thoughtfully. Be sure you have a similar anchor chart in your classroom!
